absolutemoron mix 001: absolutemoron - misconception

Here is the inaugural absolutemoron DJ mix. I have tried to encapsulate all that I love about house music, and set the tone for future mixes that appear on the blog. It has an old school feel, but is made up of tracks both old and new!

More details and full tracklisting after the jump!

The mix kicks off with some classic deep house. The Pepe Bradock track is one of the all-time great deep house tracks (this interview shows the regard it is held in some circles), whilst Carl Craig's remix of 'Lovelee Dae' keeps up the classic feel, before the lush deepness is stripped back on the next couple of tracks.

I have to credit Radio Slave for the next couple of tracks. His mix for fabric introduced me to the excellent Nina Kraviz (check out more of her tracks and interview on Resident Advisor), whilst I first heard the Kentphonik track on his mix CD for 3 which is well worth picking up (it's free!).

The Stefan Goldmann track is a long-time favourite of mine, even though I'm not really a fan of the remixer Riton. The full track has more bumps, twists and turns than a rollercoaster, and ought to be checked out in its entirety (can't believe you can't stream this track in full!). But I wanted to move things along with the mix so brought in another of my personal classics, one of the early releases on Paper which sounds more relevant than ever with the recent convergence between house and dub(step).

The Damian Schwartz track sees the mix move into more recent material, though heavily influenced by old school sounds. The mix into the track is a little rough around the edges, but I hope this ties in with the rawness of the music! I like to be as accurate and smooth as possible, but I prefer to mix live rather than using a computer to beatmatch for me. I respect DJs who use software to good effect but I like to hear the human element! 'Holloway' is a DJ tool in my eyes, so I get on three decks between Paper Issue 2 and the DJ T. (watch out for his forthcoming fabric CD) track - this MCDE remix was one of my favourites from 2009!

A little more mixing looseness as I loop the intro to Hardrive's 'Deep Inside' - undoubtedly one of my favourite MAW tracks, for me the early/mid 90s was my favourite period of theirs, when the soulfulness was tempered by rough beats and heavy basslines. Jordan Fields has always been criminally underrated in my eyes, and this track also puts a soulful, yearning vocal against a jacking track, this time with a nice acid undertone. Deetron has been one of my favourite producers of the last few years, and is clearly paying homage to classic Sneak on 'Orange'.

A trio of cuts from the late 80s/early 90s follow, which I believe deserve higher status amongst the pantheon of 'classics', before I finish with two piano tracks referencing a similar period. Missing Linkx (aka Soulphiction) nails Marshall Jefferson's uplifting Chicago sound, whilst ending on Tony Lionni's Inner City-alike 'Found A Place' may be slightly clichéd, but I'm going to justify it by tenuously stating that we're both from Liverpool!

Hope you enjoy the mix.
